The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and retains a good tension on its stretcher. The paint surface has been somewhat flattened by the relining treatment, however, the artist’s technique and textured brushwork remains appreciable and the highest impasto is well preserved. Examination under ultra violet light reveals a repaired diagonal tear with associated retouching in the background, immediately to the right of the dog’s front legs (lower centre), and a repaired damage to the background to the left of the hind legs (lower centre). There is some scattered infilling associated to the craquelure, chiefly in the sky, and some more minor spots of strengthening.
The giltwood frame is in good condition.
