The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This three-piece oak panel has been laid down on another cradled panel and remains stable. There is a restored crack running vertically through the inscription in the upper right corner of approximately 9 cm. In raking light, restoration is visible in the upper centre as well as to another horizontal crack in the centre left of approximately 6 cm. Restoration is visible in the darker passages of the flesh tones, particularly in the Christ Child as well as in the Virgin’s face and neck, and some further restoration to cracks and lifting paint above the head of the Christ Child. There is historic restoration to a piece of the panel that was seemingly re-attached to the backing panel in the lower left corner, along with restoration to visible cracks in the panel joins in the lower centre and abrasion in the lower right corner. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above and reveals further restoration to the whites of the Virgin‘s undershirt as well as to restoration in the contouring shadows of the Christ Child’s flesh tones, as well as extensive restoration to the background. Further historic restoration around the edges of the panel is visible associated with frame wear.
