The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas retains a good tension on its stretcher. The paint surface has been flattened by the relining treatment and there is evidence of lifting in the foreground, lower left, near the signature, and a smaller area in the upper right section of sky. The former area of lifting should be stabilised to avoid potential future paint losses. However, the wealth of narrative detail remains appreciable throughout the composition. There is a small loss to the horse’s stomach with an associated retouching.
Examination under ultra violet reveals scattered strengthening to the sky and foreground with some minor retouching (associated to craquelure) in the horse.
