Lot Essay

Voltigeur, by Voltaire, dam Martha Lynn, was foaled in 1847, and bred by Robert Stephenson, who had also bred his sire. It was not until he was a two-year-old that Voltigeur found a new home; Robert Hill, the trainer for the second Earl of Zetland, persuaded his employer to bring the colt to Aske Hall. The following year he won the Derby and St Leger Stakes, as commemorated by the present portrait.
