Although the facial type of the present figure of Neptune has a more northern European feel to it, the author of the present bronze must have been familiar with Gianlorenzo Bernini's treatment of the same subject, originally executed in 1622-23 for the gardens of the Villa Montalto and today in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

The surface with traces of a degraded lacquer (?) and extensively oxidised overall. Minor traces of red paint to the reverse of Nepture's head. Overall in good condition.
