The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is approximately 1⁄8 inch thick and is supported on the reverse with a cradle-like system consisting of three horizontal bars running along the upper and lower edges and across the center, and three vertical slats, which are jammed. The panel bows slightly concavely from top to bottom. Two horizontal cracks are visible on the reverse at upper left and approximately 5 inches from the lower edge, respectively. Under natural light, the varnish is clear but somewhat yellowed. A horizontal crack is visible running across the center of the panel. Additional cracks are seen along the upper edge, as well as one running from the center to the right edge, across Isaac’s eyes, and one running from the center to the left edge, over Jacob’s hip. A 2 inch area of lifted paint is visible near Jacob’s right foot and additional lifting is visible on Rebekah’s head. Scuffing is visible at the corners of the panel. Ultraviolet light does not easily penetrate the varnish, though strengthening is visible to the architecture behind Rebekah, to the background around Isaac’s body, and to the right side of his pillows, as well as in the areas surrounding the cracks. The painting would benefit from conservation by an old masters conservator.
