CIRCLE OF LUCAS GASSEL (HELMOND C. 1495/1500-C. 1570 BRUSSELS)
An extensive landscape with a town along a river and Samson and the lion in the foreground
Though Max Friedländer attributed this painting to Lucas Gassel, it is now believed to be by an anonymous contemporary active in the third quarter of the sixteenth century. Anna Koopstra has associated it with a group of at least four somewhat larger panels (Helmond, Museum Helmond; Madrid, Antiguedades Lozano; sold Christie's, Amsterdam, 20-21 November 2013, lot 75 and formerly Wassenaar, Gosschalk collection) and one of smaller size (formerly J. Freling, Amsterdam) that likewise depict Old Testament subjects and presumably originate from the same workshop.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The cradled panel is composed of two horizontally oriented boards and measures approximately ¼ inch thick with beveling evident along all four edges. The varnish is slightly cloudy and yellowed and the paint is stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in the darkest passages in natural light. Under ultraviolet light, scattered fine horizontal strokes of retouching to close the wood grain in the sky fluoresce. Further historic retouching is evident in an approximately 4 inch long fine diagonal line through the tree at lower left, as well as an approximately 2 x ½ inch passage at the extreme lower left. A more recent campaign of retouching strongly fluoresces to address a few small areas of loss in the landscape and structures at lower left, as well as some flaking along the panel join. The panel can be displayed in its current state, but its appearance would likely be dramatically enhanced following a sensitive conservation treatment.
