George Keyes, who had previously only known this painting from an old black-and-white photograph, has suggested this painting relates to a small number of works datable to the second half of the 1630s and early 1640s (written communication, 13 January 2021). Characteristic of these paintings is the luminous sky and pattern of thin, transparent clouds. Particularly close comparisons can be drawn with a painting dated 1638 as well as a large panorama in the Hannema-de Stuers collection in Heino (see Keyes, op. cit., nos. P21 andP25). Keyes further suggests the staffage may be by Pieter Post (loc. cit.).
We are grateful to Dr. George Keyes for his assistance with this entry and for endorsing the attribution of the painting on the basis of a high resolution image.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel, which appears to be composed of two horizontally oriented boards, measures approximately ¼ inch thick and has been laid down to a secondary piece of wood. The varnish is somewhat cloudy and yellowed and the paint generally stable on the support, save a small area of lifting paint in the central sky. Light scuffing due to frame abrasion is visible along the edges. Ultraviolet light reveals a network of fine scattered dots of retouching in the sky to address the natural aging of the paint as well as a fine horizontal line at center, apparently to address losses along the panel join. A more concentrated area of earlier retouching measuring approximately 2 x 3 inches fluoresces above the top of the trees at upper right. The landscape appears to be generally well preserved, with some age-related thinning evident in the figures and touches of retouching in the water. The painting can be displayed in its present state, though the small area of lifting paint should be consolidated.
