ENOCH SEEMAN (DANZIG, NOW GDAŃSK C. 1694-1744 LONDON)
Portrait of Katherine Watson Southwell (d. 1765) holding a book, three-quarter-length, before a landscape
Katherine Watson Southwell was the daughter of the Whig politician Edward Watson, Viscount Sondes (1686-1722), who served in Parliament from 1708 until 1722, and Lady Catherine Tufton. On 21 August 1729, she married Edward Southwell (1705-1755), a descendant of Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex (1485-1540). Southwell sat in the Parliament of Ireland from 1727 until his death, succeeded his father as Principal Secretary of State for Ireland in 1730 and served as an MP from Bristol between 1739 and 1754. The couple had two children, Edward (1738-1777) - later Baron de Clifford - and Katherine (1739-1748).

The painting presents very well overall. The canvas has a wax relining and is firm on its stretcher. The paint surface is clean beneath a clear varnish. There are two small indentations in the background to the right of the sitter’s shoulder and a fine, horizontal surface scratch above her head.
Inspection under UV reveals concentrated areas of minor retouching, mostly in the background but with one area under the chin and above the proper left shoulder of the sitter. Her face, chest and arms remain largely untouched. There is a small, restored hole with inpainting of approx. 4 by 3 in. on the left side of the pink bodice.
The small indentations could be attended to if desired but the painting is otherwise ready to hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved gilt wood frame.
