The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining which retains good tension. The varnish is slightly cloudy and yellowed and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. There is a small loss along the upper right edge. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching along the edges to address earlier frame abrasion as well as fine strokes of retouching in the background and figure, generally to address fine scratches or reinforce contours of the man’s hair, face and garments. A further passage of retouching directly below the center of the man’s ruff and measuring approximately ½ inch in diameter restores what appears to be a small puncture in the canvas. The painting presents well and can be displayed in its current state.
