We are grateful to Thomas Art Conservation LLC for providing the following condition report: This painting is in good condition overall. The slightly discolored varnish fluoresces strongly under UV illumination, making it difficult to confirm the presence of restoration on the picture. Small touches of the most recent restoration atop the varnish are limited in nature, including some strokes in the lips. Retouching beneath the varnish is quite accomplished and not at all obvious. Under close examination, broad restoration in the background appears to cover much of the original paint and restoration glazing seems to have been applied to Mary’s garment. Some of the contours in the elaborate folds in Mary’s head covering have been strengthened. The pink flushes in the flesh passages as well as some of the modeling seem to be reinforced with restoration. Mary’s hair on the right and Jesus’ proper right hand are at least partially reconstructed given the lack of craquelure in this area. The horizontally grained wood panel is structurally sound, with a narrow bevel on the reverse. This painting may be displayed in its current state. Cleaning to remove the somewhat discolored varnish could be considered, but given how well the painting presents in its present condition, is not at all necessary.
