The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The canvas has an old glue lining and is quite firmly stretched. The paint surface is a little abraded in the background and the darks of the hair have sunk somewhat, resulting in a loss of definition.

Inspection under UV reveals more than one campaign of restoration with more recent retouching and strengthening, most concentrated in the right hand section of the background and lower section in the doublet. There appears to be an older campaign of retouching to the face and broader strengthening to the left side of the head and jaw.
