The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel appears to be constructed of two vertically oriented boards which measure approximately 1/8 inch thick and has a cradle on the reverse. The varnish is slightly cloudy and yellowed and the paint stable on the support. Four restored vertical cracks, the largest of which measures approximately 8 inches in length, extend from the upper and lower edges of the painting. An old restored horizonal scratch measuring approximately 6 inches in length is visible in natural light below the man’s beard. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the aforementioned cracks and join as well as a passage of retouching measuring approximately 3 x 1 inches along the lower edge at right. Further fine dots of scattered retouching also fluoresce, some of which appear to belong to an earlier conservation treatment. The man’s face appears to be well preserved, with only a handful of fine touches and dots of restoration evident. The painting should be hung in its present state.
