The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The uncradled panel is composed of a single board measuring approximately ¼ inch thick with beveling along all four sides of the reverse and a slight convex bow running from left to right. The varnish is slightly dull and yellowed and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. Ultraviolet light reveals a campaign of restoration to the background, partially to reinforce the contour of the figure and to address losses to a vertical crack extending approximately 9 inches from the edge at upper left. Further areas of retouching fluoresce in the emperor’s garments, notably at lower left and to reinforce contours of the drapery enveloping his proper left shoulder. Aside from a few scattered passages of retouching, the flesh and hair appear to be better preserved. The painting can be displayed in its present state.
