The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining which retains good tension. The varnish is generally clear and minimally yellowed and the paint stable on the support. A very fine craquelure is visible in natural light, as is a pinhead sized loss in the architecture just above center. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered lines and scumbles of strengthening in the architecture and sky, generally to reinforce contours and space, with further fine lines of strengthening evident in the still life elements in the middle ground at left. This appears largely to address loss of definition due to the natural aging of some of the darkest pigments. Aside from a few stray dots and lines of strengthening, the figures appear to be in a very good state of preservation, with all fine details reading clearly. The painting should be enjoyed in its current state.
