Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The panel is approximately ¹⁄₄ inch thick and is uncradled. It bows slightly from left to right. The reverse of the panel exhibits beveling on all four sides. Under natural light, the varnish is cloudy and the painting does not appear to have been cleaned in a long time. A fine craquelure is visible in the whites of his clothing. Ultraviolet light does not appear to penetrate the old, soiled varnish. The painting would likely improve with a light cleaning and new varnish.
