The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The unbeveled panel is flat and stable and cradled on the reverse. The paint surface is slightly dirty and somewhat uneven due to old cracking and flaking along the woodgrain, which has been stabilized and filled. There is overpaint and retouching visible with the naked eye, most notably in Saint Jerome’s torso, hand and the red drapery. A full understanding of the painting’s condition is impeded by an opaque varnish which fluoresces green. Ultraviolet light reveals strengthening to the painted arch and retouching scattered throughout, particularly concentrated on the area surrounding the pedestal of the cross. The painting is offered in a carved wood and gilt frame.
