The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting presents well overall. The panel is made up of a single unbeveled vertical board which is flat and stable. The paint surface is stable and overall appears to be in good condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals minor retouched losses in the flesh tones; including in the virgin’s cheek, chin, neck and hand as well as in the Christ Child’s cheek. There appears to be an older campaign of restoration with lightly applied retouching along the contours of the Christ Child’s chest, legs and elbow and in the figure’s faces. The Virgin’s hair has been strengthened. Some of the flesh tones have become transparent over time revealing traces of drawing underneath. The painting is offered in a carved gilt wood frame with velvet insert, which may require adjustment to correctly fit.
