NICOLAES MAES (DORDRECHT 1634-1693 AMSTERDAM)
Portrait of a lady, three-quarter-length, with a bouquet of flowers, in a landscape; and Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter-length, leaning on a relief, in a landscape
In the second half of the 1650s, Nicolaes Maes, who had studied with Rembrandt earlier that decade, increasingly abandoned his early interest in genre and historical subjects in favor of portraiture, so much so that by circa 1660 he was exclusively a portraitist. Maes’ fashionable brand of portraiture found particular acclaim in the wealthy city of Amsterdam, to which he moved from Dordrecht in 1673. By the time this elegant couple sat for their portraits circa 1678-80, it could rightly be said that ‘so much work came his way that it was deemed a favor if one person was granted the opportunity to sit for his portrait before another, and so it remained for the rest of his life’ (A. Houbraken, De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen, II, The Hague, 1719, p. 275).

The Young Woman: The painting has been reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining. The canvas is secure on its stretcher, but there is an area of buckling in the lower right corner, likely caused by the lower part of the stretcher. There are pin-point losses along the fine craquleure, some of which have beed filled and retouched, and have discolored over time as seen in the catalogue image. The varnish is dirty, slightly yellowed. and has a matte finish. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a varnish which flouresces green. Ultraviolet light also revealed strengthening to the contours of the bouquet and the draperies. The painting could benefit from a cleaning to remove the old varnish. The painting is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
The Young Man: The painting has been reinforced with a glue lining. The canvas is secure on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable, although there are handful of small losses in the background and pin-point losses along the fine craquelure, as evident in the catalogue image. The varish is dirty and has yellowed with age. Some losses in the the sitter's cheek and hair have been retouched. Other retouches to the flesh tones, white ruff and draperies have discolored with age. Inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by a varnish which flouresces green. Strengthening to the contours of the sitter's hair and to the relief sculpture at lower left are, however, visible. The painting could benefit from a cleaning to remove the old varnish. The painting is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
