The shield on the cover is unusual in that the heraldic supporters for the void shield are the lion and unicorn of Britain. The combination of the English lion and the Scottish unicorn dates to the accession of James I in 1603 who was already James VI of Scotland.

Overall wear and rubbing with some small natural grain cracks in the knots of wood. With an iron strengthener at the hinge. a restored break at handle terminal, a few pieces of bone missing. Many of the turned beads from the handle and the arches above the evangelists replaced. The beads in the shield may also be replacements. The handle slightly loose.
