The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining which retains good tension. The varnish is generally clear, if slightly yellowed, and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. A handful of unobtrusive pinhead sized losses are visible in natural light, notably in the architecture and landscape at lower right. Under ultraviolet light, the painting appears to have been selectively cleaned with areas of old varnish fluorescing green. A relatively recent campaign of restoration is also evident. This is principally composed of fine horizontal strokes in the sky and landscape with further fine strokes in the drapery, mainly to reinforce contours in the yellow worn by Saint Anne and the blue of the Virgin. The painting presents well in its current state and no further treatment is necessary.
