Born in Antwerp around 1530, Simon Pereyns moved to Lisbon in 1558 and subsequently resided in Madrid before relocating to New Spain in 1566. Among the paintings attributable to him are the altarpiece of Huejotzingo in the Franciscan convent of Huejotzingo in Puebla, a Saint Christopher in the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City and the Altar of Forgiveness in Mexico City, which was destroyed by fire in 1967. Documentary evidence indicates that Pereyns made the Altar of Forgiveness as recompense after the Inquisition tried and jailed him for blasphemy.
The present painting, which bears an early inscription on its reverse, is a more tightly cropped version of a painting by Pereyns which is also on copper and today in the Museo Soumaya, Fundación Carlos Slim in Mexico City.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting presents very well overall. The copper panel is flat and stable and in good condition. The paint surface is relatively clean beneath a slightly matt varnish.
Inspection under UV reveals very little restoration, with only minor retouching along the left edge, in the collar of the right hand figure, in the drapery beneath Christ’s hand and in the broom.
The painting could benefit from a very light clean and revarnish, according to taste, or could be hung as it appears presently. Offered in a decoratively carved gilt wood frame.
