The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The uncradled panel is composed of three vertically oriented boards that measure approximately ¼ inch thick and are reinforced on the reverse with three horizontal batons. The thick, aged varnish is discolored and yellowed and the paint stable on the support. A very fine craquelure is visible in natural light. A vertical crack measuring approximately 12 inches in length is visible along the extreme upper left edge, as are scuffing and small, marginal losses due to earlier frame abrasion and a small loss to the panel at upper center. Two shorter cracks extend vertically from the top of the central board. The panel joins have begun to separate with commensurate losses, notably along the lower part of the join at left. Light scuffing is evident in the varnish, particularly at lower left and center right. Ultraviolet light does not easily penetrate the old varnish which fluoresces green, though areas of retouching are evident in natural light, notably in the boy’s torso. The painting’s appearance would likely be dramatically enhanced following treatment. Please note the painting is being offered unframed.
