THOMAS PATCH (EXETER 1725-1782 FLORENCE)
A Mediterranean seaport with fisherfolk in the foreground
Born in Exeter in 1725, Thomas Patch traveled to Rome in 1747 with Richard Dalton, who would later become the librarian to King George III. In Rome, he met Joshua Reynolds and worked for Joseph Vernet, whose influence is evident in the present painting. In 1755, the Tribunale della Santa Inquisizione banished him from Rome over claims of homosexual indiscretion and he fled to Florence, where he would spend the remainder of his life.

The canvas is supported with a glue lining and the paint is stable on the support. Under natural light, the varnish is clear. A fine craquelure is visible at lower left. A pentimento of a standing man is slightly visible near the lower left corner. Scattered, discolored retouches are visible over a 5 inch area in the sky at center, above the flag. Under ultraviolet light, scattered minute touches of strengthening fluoresce in the sky. Retouching is also visible along the wooden pole at lower right, as well as over a few 1 inch areas near the lower left corner. The painting may be displayed as is.
