First Spanish Edition of The Wealth of Nations

First edition in Spanish of The Wealth of Nations, translated by Josef Alonso Ortiz, who has added a 41-page appendix at the end of volume II on the Banco Nacional Español de San Carlos, established in Madrid in 1783. A second edition appeared, also at Valladolid, in 1805-06. The first mention of Smith in Spanish had occurred two years earlier with the publication of a translation of Condorcet's summary of the Wealth of Nations. Four volumes, quarto (200 x 132mm). Half-title in vol. I (small marginal paper repair on fore-edge of a few leaves in vol. I not affecting text; light dampstains on corners of beginning of vol. IV). Contemporary marbled calf, spines gilt with contrasting red and green lettering and numbering pieces, red edges (small abrasion on front cover of vol. III, repaired; extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance: contemporary unidentified ownership initials in vol. IV.
