From the Library of Elizabeth Paepcke (1902-1994) In the 1940s, the Chicago philanthropist Elizabeth Paepcke and her husband, industrialist Walter Paepcke, moved to Aspen, Colorado where they were credited with transforming the sleepy ski town into a world-class resort with a vibrant cultural life. Together they founded the Aspen Insitute for Humanistic Studies and the Aspen Music Festival, both of which drew legions of intellectuals and artists across disciplines to the area.
