Created in 1954 by Calvin and Ruby Black, the “Possum Trot Shop and Fantasy Doll Show,” located in the Mojave Desert in California, was an immersive, whimsical environment, indoors and outside, full of sculptures, painted signs and toy-like works that became a popular tourist attraction.

Drawing on Calvin's previous experience as a ventriloquist and carnival worker, the ladies performed in the “Fantasy Doll Show” at the Birdcage Theater. They were often wired for sound and many of them were displayed on wind-driven merry go-rounds.
Carved from redwood and pine, the all-female ensemble was modeled after friends and public figures. The 86 near life size wooden dolls, carved and painted by Calvin and dressed in costumes designed and sewn by Ruby, each bore a nameplate and distinct personality. Visitors were invited to place donations in “kitty boxes” positioned before each doll, with proceeds designated for the figure’s wardrobe and perfume.

The 1977 documentary Possum Trot: The Life and Work of Calvin Black by Allie Light and Irving Saraf explores this remarkable world. The present lot is among the signs featured in this film.
