Lot Essay

This hand-made architectural Paddington has been made to showcase London’s ability to create international icons with local materials. The construction company, European Land, who made this striking bear have turned Merchant Square, and the Grand Union canal basin around it, into one of the biggest regeneration projects in London.
It seemed entirely appropriate to dress him entirely in brick, especially as Paddington has been the most famous character associated with the area over the last 50 years.
"Paddington Bear is an icon for London W2 and we’re delighted to welcome him to Merchant Square in aid of the NSPCC and Action Medical Research. The trail through Paddington will highlight the area as a cultural and innovative hotspot for local residents and visitors alike. There’s a lot going on in Paddington at the moment and the trail is an excellent way to appreciate it."
Author of the Paddington books, Michael Bond, lives nearby to this day.
