FOUR HARD WOOD RUYI SCEPTERS
19TH-20TH CENTURY
The first is carved in the form of a stalk of the lingzhi with further lingzhi borne on the shaft. The second is carved on the shaft with an archaistic dragon motif and inset with two jade plaques: one carved with pine and lingzhi, and the other carved with two confronting chilong. The third is naturalistically carved as the stalk of a lingzhi wound with stems of four smaller lingzhi and the head carved with leafy grapes. The fourth is carved with leafy flowering vines.
16 ¾, 16 ¾, 16, 12 ¼ in. (42.5, 42.5, 40.6, 31.1 cm.) long

The ruyi scepter is a symbol of longevity, with the presence of lingzhi reinforcing this wish. This particular example is well-rendered and organic depiction of a cluster of wild-growing lingzhi. Such a work would have been highly prized, its naturalism well-suited to the taste of a scholar.
