A GROUP OF TWO SOAPSTONE MOUNTAIN-FORM SEALS AND THREE SOAPSTONE MOUNTAINS
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
All five are well carved in low relief with verdant and watery landscapes, some with figures in boats and amidst pavilions. The face of the larger seal reads bu lu wenzhang shi yi jing ('the world is already amazed even [the old cedar] does not grow any beautiful flowers or foliage'). The smaller seal is carved on its face with a four character seal, ou yi wei zhi ('to do something once in a while').
2, 1 7/8, 2, 2 9/16 and 2 ½ in. (5.1, 4.8, 5.1, 6.5 and 6.4 cm.) high

Lot Essay

The inscription on the larger seal face was taken from a poem on an old cedar by Tang dynasty poet Du Fu (712-770).
