Lot Essay

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) was one of the most important and innovative sculptors of 19th century France. Dr. Anita Brookner called him a ‘manipulator of styles’, an epithet addressing Carrier-Belleuse's versatility and fearless experimentation in the fine and decorative arts. Titled Mélodie or Harmonie, this statue of a classical robed female muse is among Carrier-Belleuse’s most successful works, it is typical of his style at the height of his fame during the 1860s when he received important sculptural and architectural commissions, exemplified by his silvered-bronze female figures sculptured for the cheminée de la grande chamber at the Hôtel de la Païva, Paris, completed in 1866. Another bronze cast like the present lot sold Christie's, London, 29 April 2010, lot 260 (£7,500).
