Lot Essay
The firm Charpentier & Cie was first founded in 1830 and was recorded at 8, Rue Charlot, Paris in 1860, prior to changing their name to Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie circa 1870, which they retained until 1890. Known for their high quality of craftsmanship, the firm produced bronze sculptures, garnitures, vases, torchères, and clocks, such as the present lot, which they exhibited at international exhibitions throughout the second-half of the nineteenth century.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This extremely decorative clock is in overall very good condition. The ormolu with some tarnish. The female figure with variations in tone to the patination, including a lacquered surface to her body which provides a nice contrast to the red tones of her robes. The reverse of the figure with minor denting and scratches to the top section of her robe. The gilt writing to the clock face with some rubbing, primarily to the area beneath the 'VI'. The movement marked 'LEMERLE, CHARPENTIER/ FNT DE RBOZNES/ 167/ PARIS. The pendulum marked '167' and the key marked '6'. The marble base with only minor 'nibbled' chips to some edges. Christie's recommends that the movement is cleaned and serviced to bring into full working condition. Please note Christie's do not guarantee the working condition, duration or timekeeping of clocks offered for sale.
