Lot Essay

The central figure of a huntsman tying a doe to a white horse bears a resemblance to John Brown (1826-1883) the Scottish servant befriended by Queen Victoria. The composition is in the style of Carl Haag's painting Evening at Balmoral Castle, given to Prince Albert by Queen Victoria on his birthday in August 1854.
