The makers of this very fine pair of bookcases offer interesting insight into how intertwined the work between 19th-century furniture makers could be. Originally listed as a restorer of antique furniture and supplier of metal furniture fittings for other ébénistes, Dromard appears to have developed under his own name an atelierwhich produced a wide variety of furniture, predominantly in the revivalist styles including those inspired by the Louis XVI period (as seen here), Renaissance, and Chinese works of art (C. Payne, Paris Furniture: The luxury market of the 19th century, Paris, 2018, p. 337). The firm of l’Escalier de Cristal similarly produced a diverse array of works, but was also known to have acquired furniture from other makers which were sold under the l’Escalier name. This lot presents a clear example of this exchange, having almost certainly been constructed and mounted by Dromard and retailed by l’Escalier.
