Lot Essay

The present lot closely recalls another pair of Chinese-inspired pedestals in the collection of Paris antiquaireMarc Maison (ref.11442) which are affixed with the original paper label for L’Escalier de Cristal, Pannier- Lahoche & Cie. The celebrated firm l'Escalier de Cristal was acquired in 1839 by M. Lahoche, after which the firm passed to his son-in-law, Emile Pannier, circa 1864-66. In 1885, Georges and Henry Pannier succeeded their father and continued to produce a variety of objects, including furniture in the popular Chinese and Japanese styles designed by Édouard Lièvre (d.1886) and Gabriel Viardot (d.1906). It is interesting to note that a similar design for a guéridon chinois credited to Viardot appears in the notebook of Henry Pannier with reference to clients who perhaps acquired the model, including a ‘G. Petit’ perhaps referring to the art dealer Georges Petit (d.1920) (carnet no. 2, p. 3).
