Lot Essay

Eric Clapton was asked to perform at legendary concert The Last Waltz, the farewell concert appearance of American-Canadian rock group The Band, at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco on 25 November 1976. Filmed by Martin Scorsese for his 1978 documentary of the same name, the concert included appearances by several special guests including Clapton, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Wood, and Ringo Starr. Having arrived with Clapton a few days early for rehearsals, Pattie Boyd was able to capture this rare shot of Joni Mitchell and Robbie Robertson on stage before the main event.
