The sea creature motifs and crashing wave ground found on the current alms bowl are very similar to the decoration on a bronze vase in the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, with a punched inscription dating to 1173, illustrated in Rose Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, London, 1990, nos. 46 and 47.
