Lot Essay
The present jade plaque featuring a Spring Water motif depicts a serene setting, where the bird seamlessly merges with ponds decorated with flowers, leaves, and other water plants.
Deeply influenced by the cultural legacy of the Liao and Jin dynasties, the Yuan and Ming periods, while not strictly bound to the traditions of Spring Water and Autumn Mountain activities, saw a flourishing of artistic expressions focused on these themes, leaving behind numerous jade carvings as heirlooms.
Compare to an example housed in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, reference number guyu004344N000000000; And a set of Heluo Spring Water jade plaques, illustrated in In Pursuit of Fine Jades: Pictorial Jades, Hong Kong, 2024, pp.90-121, no.2.
