Lot Essay

Also known as ‘pith paper’ paintings, these Chinese watercolours made for a Western audience featured subjects such as flowers, insects, manufacturing and farming, as well as figures. The quality and detail of the paintings produced was greatly varied, but it is unusual to find paintings of ladies in interior settings with furniture in situ rather than against a plain background. Of particular note is the depiction of a variety of wood furniture in the paintings, providing precious materials for the study of Chinese furniture.
