PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE ASIAN COLLECTION

A PAINTED ‘GATHERING OF LUOHAN’ SANDALWOOD FOLDINGFAN
REPUBLIC PERIOD
The face of the fan is painted with a gathering of luohan, along with an inscription of the Heart Sutra written and signed with one seal, by the artist Wan Shen, dating Ren Wu – possibly to the year 1942. The reverse of the fan is inscribed with the Diamond Sutra, written and signed with one seal, by Yang Xinpeng, dating Jia Shen – possibly to the year 1944. Both inscriptions are dedicated to the scholar Cao Zhenqiu (1902-1995). The guardsticks and slats of the fan are both made of sandalwood, where both guardsticks are carved with various shou characters.
