Lot Essay

This table service was made for Antoni Cierplikowski (1884-1976). Of Polish origin, Cierplikowski was the world's first celebrity hairdresser after he opened the salon Antoine de Paris in Paris and became known as Monsieur Antoine. Hair entrepreneur, Antoine de Paris created the bob, as well as the perm, hair lacquer, blonde highlights and blue tints. He is best remembered for having given the Duchess of Windsor her 'Italian Madonna' look and Greta Garbo her long bob but his inspirational moment was transforming in 1910 the 45 years old French Eve Lavalliere into an 18 year-old girl with short hairs and bangs which brought him a plethora of clients looking for rejuvenation. He then went on to created the garçonne for Coco Chanel, Josephine baker and Edith Piaf and counted amongst his clients world-famous personalities such as Queen Marie of Romania, Sarah Bernhardt, U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and Brigitte Bardot.
