Avec Diagram of Doom 2, Edward Steichen dessine les nouvelles lignes du bouleversement photographique au début des années 1920. Remarqué très tôt dans l’exposition The New School of AmericanPhotography en 1900, il prend part au Pictorialisme avec des compositions de plus en plus réfléchies, du Portrait d’AugusteRodin en 1902 au Flatiron Building en 1904. Steichen s’associe à la création de la revue Camera Work avec Alfred Stieglitz puis s’engage dans la guerre en 1917. À son retour, il abandonne les effets propres au Pictorialisme pour se concentrer sur des cadrages serrés et des contrastes plus prononcés. Ainsi, il invente avec d’autres photographes comme Paul Outerbridge Jr., Jaromír Funke, László Moholy-Nagy ou Man Ray, une nouvelle approche moderniste pour le médium photographique.
Diagram of Doom 2 s’inscrit dans cette perspective avec la présence d’une lumière plus vive, d’ombres théâtrales et d’angles aux contours distincts et aigus. Ce sont d’abord les qualités formelles, notamment la mise au point, qui permettent la singularité de ce jeu de lumière. La lumière se trouble et se confond avec les ombres, à l’exception de celle du papillon qui trace une diagonale stricte. Les angles dessinés par la forme de l’aile et des feuilles emprisonnent le sujet dans un nouveau cadre légèrement déséquilibré. Aussi, l’image dichotomique du papillon, avec le contour d’une aile et l’ombre de l’autre, accentue sa présence inquiétante et tragique. Dans ce cadre dépouillé, sans horizon, la diagonale sombre ajoute la gravité et l’imaginaire des films noirs d’Abel Gance ou de Fritz Lang.

With Diagram of Doom 2, Edward Steichen captured the lines of a new photographic vision in the early 1920s. After attracting early recognition in the The New School ofAmerican Photography exhibition in 1900, he emerged as a notable Pictorialist, his compositions growing ever more considered, from his 1902 Portrait of Auguste Rodin to his 1904 FlatironBuilding. Steichen collaborated with Alfred Stieglitz to launch the periodical Camera Work, after which he enlisted in army in 1917. After the war, he gave up the specific effects of Pictorialism to focus on tight framing and more striking contrasts. Thus, along with other photographers, among them Paul Outerbridge Jr, Jaromír Funke, László Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray, he invented a new, modernist approach to photography.
Diagram of Doom 2 is faithful to this new artistic trend that embraces brighter light, dramatic shadows, and angles with sharp, distinct outlines. Its formal qualities are essential to this unique play of light, particularly the camera’s shallow, controlled focus. The light blurs and fuses with darkness, except for the butterfly’s shadow, which delineates a sharp diagonal. The angles drawn by the wing and the paper sheets capture the subject in a new, slightly off-balance frame. As such, the butterfly’s dichotomous image, with one wing clearly outlined and the other represented by a shadow, emphasises its disturbing and tragic presence. In this pure and stripped frame, with no horizon, the dark diagonal adds gravitas, evoking Abel Gance and Fritz Lang’s film noir atmosphere.
So, the piece’s title could be a metaphor for the artist’s explorations and choices. Diagram of Doom 2: a synthesis of modernism, fragile and enigmatic.
