Lot Essay

Despite starting out in painting and drawing, Guy Bourdin became Man Ray’s assistant and protégé in the 1950s. In 1967, he began collaborating with Charles Jourdan, the famous shoe designer. This collaboration would last 22 years and give rise to amazing pictures like those shown here — apparently simple, yet concealing a profound awareness of colour, models' posture, and creativity. In Bourdin’s fashion photos, the image is more important than the product. Guy Bourdin was much more than a fashion or ad campaign photographer — he was an artist with a sense of humour, telling stories in each one of his works. His compositions were scripted, his frames became decorations, and his models turned into actresses. By creating mysterious, sometimes unusual, but always dreamy and appealing worlds, Bourdin’s work was a subtle nod to his passion for Surrealism. Guy Bourdin’s bold framing, graphic compositions and surprising effects made him into an artist who, alongside Newton, permanently disrupted fashion photography in the 1970s.
