L’appareil photo de Lewis Baltz habitait les lieux où la solitude a gagné. Ce ne sont pas des lieux désolés ou inhabitables, mais bien ceux où l’homme a été. Baltz représente l’une des figures les plus importantes, en tant que précurseur et inventeur, du mouvement des « New Topographics ». Ce nom fait référence au titre de l’exposition New Topographics: Photographs ofa Man-altered Landscape présentée dans la maison Rochester à New York en 1975. The New Topographics choisissent l’antithèse de la tradition photographique de paysages du siècle dernier, incarnée par Timothy O’Sullivan, Carleton Watkins ou William Henry Jackson.
À la vision innocente, prospère, romantique et pittoresque, ils veulent dorénavant montrer les paysages américains de la manière la plus minimale, avec détachement. Baltz s’inscrit artistiquement dans cette apathie dès ses premières photographies lors de ses études à la San Francisco Art Institute en 1967 et lors de sa première exposition à la galerie Castelli à New York en 1971 qui rassemble ses fameuses Tract Houses.
Orange County from the prototype works est assez singulière dans l’univers des photographies de l’artiste parce qu’il n’y a pas de lignes orthogonales pour dessiner un nouveau cadre. Cependant, plusieurs signes rattachent cette image à la série Tract House, comme les portes fermées ou les textures d’acier abandonné. La photographie montre un mobil-home au milieu de nulle part. Sans un relief, sans une ville ; seulement un lampadaire. Elle semble cassée et usée par ses anciens habitants et par le temps. Le photographe fait dialoguer les contradictions de l’Amérique. Une maison pour vivre sur la route qui demeure immobilisée. L’envie de partir et le besoin de rester. L’immensité et le cadre resserré. Le photographe regarde les choses latentes, c’est-à-dire à l’état de ce qui est caché. Qu’y a-t-il dans cette caravane ? Ou même derrière ? Lewis Baltz’s camera inhabited those places where solitude triumphed. These are not desolate or uninhabitable places, but rather those where man was once present. Baltz was one of the most important figures of the “New Topographics”’ movement – of which he was a trailblazer and initiator. The name references the title of the New Topographics: Photographsof a Man-altered Landscape exhibition presented in Rochester, New York, in 1975. The New Topographics represented the antithesis of the landscape photographic tradition of the last century, as exemplified by Timothy O’Sullivan, Carleton Watkins and William Henry Jackson.
Rather than an innocent, prosperous, romantic, and picturesque vision, the objective was to show the American landscape in the most minimal and detached manner. Baltz was artistically committed to this neutrality from the time of his first photographs during his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1967 and his first exhibition at the Castelli Gallery in New York in 1971, which featured his famous Tract Houses.
Orange County from The Prototype Works is unique among the artist’s photographs because there are no orthogonal lines to create a new frame. Several signs connect this image to the Tract House series, however, such as the closed doors and the textures of discarded steel. The photograph depicts a mobile home in the middle of nowhere. No relief, no town, just a streetlamp. It looks broken and worn by its former inhabitants and by time. The photographer establishes a dialogue between the contradictions of America. A home for living on the go, but which remains stationary. The desire to leave and the need to remain. The vastness and the restricted frame. The photographer looks at things that are latent. concealed. What’s inside the caravan? Or even behind it? Lewis Baltz is interested in things latent, because he can keep a secret.
