Sikorsky Engine, 1935

L’autobiographie de Margaret Bourke-White commence avec les mots de sa mère : « Margaret, tu pourras toujours être fière d’avoir été invitée dans le monde ». Face à cette phrase énigmatique, la photographe a choisi de s’inviter elle-même dans l’ébauche de mondes artistiques encore inconnus. D’abord pour imaginer les sujets et publicités de revues avec Henry Luce en tant que rédactrice en chef de Fortune dès la création du magazine en 1930, puis en 1936 à Life où elle inaugure la couverture du premier numéro avec le Barrage de Fort-Peck, Montana. Ensuite, en réalisant une longue carrière de photojournaliste avec des reportages divers : l’un sur la pauvreté aux Etats-Unis avec Erskine Caldwell en 1937 ou un autre sur la Guerre de Corée en 1952.
Dans le travail de Margaret Bourke-White, les machines, et plus spécifiquement celles liées à l’aviation, prennent une place particulière. Il y a certainement derrière cet intérêt l’attrait des métiers en mouvement. Aussi, le renouveau industriel et son intégration dans la vie quotidienne appellent à une considération artistique nouvelle. Margaret Bourke-White dira à ce sujet : « L’industrie est le véritable lieu de l’art aujourd’hui. L’art doit exprimer l’esprit du peuple, et le coeur de la vie aujourd’hui se trouve dans les grandes activités industrielles du pays.»
En 1934, la Pan American Airways demande à la photographe une série sur « l’histoire de l’aviation ». Les inventions d’Igor Sikorsky, ingénieur aéronautique du premier avion multimoteur, deviennent l’épicentre de cette série. Margaret Bourke-White s’empare du sujet avec beaucoup de liberté, s’éloignant peu à peu d’une information stricte. Les questionnements des avant-gardes, qui se traduisent notamment par la composition de Sikorsky Engine, convoquent plusieurs questions. Quel avion pourrait décoller avec deux hélices et une seule aile ? Sikorsky Engine vole-t-il à l’arrêt ? Une tension s’installe entre le jeu des ombres et de la lumière suggérant le mouvement des pales, tandis que la diagonale forte de l’aile ancre le poids de l’appareil. Le rapport de la photographe à la modernité, à la représentation et à la suggestion du mouvement fait écho à l’imaginaire et à l’influence des futuristes.

Margaret Bourke-White’s autobiography begins with the words of her mother: “Margaret, you can always be proud that you were invited into the world”. With this enigmatic phrase in mind, the photographer chose to invite herself into emerging worlds of art as yet unknown. First by conceiving the topics and advertisements of periodicals under Henry Luce, as editor-in-chief of Fortune from the magazine’s creation in 1930, then in 1936 at Life where her photograph of the Fort Peck Dam, Montana appeared on the cover of the first issue. This was followed by a long career as a photojournalist, producing various reportages including one on poverty in the United States with Erskine Caldwell in 1937, and another on the Korean War in 1952.
Machines, and in particular those related to aviation, hold a special place in Margaret Bourke-White’s work. Without doubt, this interest is inspired by the appeal of occupations on the move. Industrial renewal and its integration into everyday life also call for a new artistic consideration. Bourke-White said on the subject, “Industry is the true place for art today. Art should express the spirit of the people, and the heart of life today is in the great industrial activities of the country”.
In 1934, Pan American Airways commissioned the photographer to produce a series on the subject of “aviation history”. The inventions of Igor Sikorsky, the aeronautical engineer of the first multi-engine aircraft, became the focal point of the series. Bourke-White tackled the subject very freely, moving gradually away from simply providing information. The questioning spirit of the avant-garde, which is reflected in the composition of Sikorsky Engine, leads to various considerations. What kind of plane could take off with two propellers and only one wing? Is the Sikorsky Engine levitating? A tension is created between the play of light and shadow suggesting the movement of the blades while the strong diagonal of the wing emphasises the weight of the aircraft. The photographer’s relationship with modernity, representation and the suggestion of movement echoes the imagination and influence of the Futurists.
