Lot Essay

Born in 1944 in the German city of Krefled, Peter Lindbergh started out as an assistant photographer for Hans Lux in the 1970s, where he rapidly forged a reputation as an excellent portraitist. In 1996, he published his first book, 10 Women, dedicated to the supermodels that shaped his career. One of these, Amber Valletta was revered by the top luxury brands and despite her young age became one of the most iconic supermodels of 1990s. In this photograph, taken in Times Square for Harper’s Bazaar, a 22-year-old Amber wanders the streets of New York in androgynous clothes, dressed as an angel with immaculate wings. Lindbergh once said of Amber: “Suddenly she was just there, and I remember clearly the shock the first time I saw her. I think particularly of the passion she puts into her work, her thoughtfulness and depth. She expresses something that touches you very deeply.”
