Men of Good Fortune is part of The Enclave series Richard Mosse produced in 2011, which documents the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The vivid, explosive colours used by the artist differentiate his work from traditional war reporting images. In this work, he obtains these shades of pink with Kodak Aerochrome film technology, originally designed by the American army during World War II to reveal camouflaged targets hidden in dense vegetation. Aerochrome captures infrared light invisible to the naked eye, transforming the shades of green of the vegetation into a tangy pink, a metaphor for the blood spilled in these African mountains. Mosse uses this technology for more than just aesthetics — he wields it to draw public attention to a military conflict whose multiple documentations since its outset in 1996 have been characterised by violent imagery. Here, Mosse has a more poetic approach that remains every bit as striking.
