This artwork is part of the Paper Drop series Wolfgang Tillmans started in 2001, which considers the relationship between the image and photographic material. The series consists of a sequence of images of photographic paper folded in on itself in a waterdrop shape, sometimes free-hanging, curling off the wall, or resting on a table, as with this 2008 proof. It is unclear at first glance what we are looking at, whether the picture is abstract or figurative, or if it is even a photograph. Tillmans captures this shape by using a shallow depth of field so that inner shadows and reflections form an otherworldly, painterly sphere framed by sharp paper edges. By focusing on photographic paper, Tillmans casts a new perspective on the history of the photographic medium and its relationship to the three-dimensional world, thereby questioning the viewer's perception. Paper Drop (New York) II is a direct celebration of this visual freedom and the joy of optical illusions or, in other words, the joy of a new way of seeing things, as the photographer frequently highlights. Tillmans’ meticulous observation of his environment, as well as his continual questioning of and experimentation with photography’s foundations and processes, sets his practice apart. Wolfgang Tillmans explained this personally meaningful series in an interview, saying: “In my lens-based Paper Drop images I made the photographic paper itself my subject matter, creating images that are figurative and abstract at the same time. I liken them to mathematical functions. I can’t calculate them, but a mathematician could describe exactly how their shapes happened through the tension of the paper and gravity. They are almost like scientific illustrations.”
