Lot Essay

Sally Mann’s, Family Pictures,  are a series of photographs that were taken between the mid-1980’s to the mid-1990’s of her three children Emmet, Jessie and Virginia. The series documents their childhoods growing up in the countryside on their family farm in rural Virginia.   In 1992, Mann published her seminal book, Immediate Family (Aperture), which brought her international acclaim and recognition for her raw, yet sublime images, encompassing a freedom and intimacy seldomly photographed within the sacred circle of the family.
