Lot Essay

The present lot is one of two extremely rare, limited edition platinum prints by the artist. New York City, 1974 and Mother and Child, New York, 1953 —two of Erwitt’s most renowned and well-loved images—are rendered in a soft yet striking platinum that is unlike any other prints ever made of these images. Lots 76 and 77 represent the first time the artist, now aged 95, has ever produced a limited edition of these images. Both signed by the artist, these photographs uniquely epitomize the comical and humanistic spirit encapsulated in Erwitt’s photographs of the people of New York. In the artist’s own words, ‘It's about reacting to what you see, hopefully without preconception. You can find pictures anywhere. It's simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what's around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy.’
