Lot Essay

Irving Penn photographed Miles Davis for an album cover in 1986. Penn was under contractual agreement to Warner Brothers, Miles Davis' record company, not to release any of the images from this sitting for five years.

This is an unnumbered print from the series given by the photographer to the company in 1986. Miles Davis also received a set. Editioned prints did not generally become available until 1992 A tightly cropped variant of this striking image graced the back vinyl cover of Miles Davis' 1986 album Tutu.
